Volleyball Tops Buffalo, 3-1, In UMass Invitational

Amherst, Mass.- The University of Massachusetts volleyball team defeated the University at Buffalo, 3-1, in the second of three matches scheduled this weekend for the Minutewomen in the UMass Invitational.
Seniors Janeen DeMarte (El Paso, Texas) and Lymarie Llovet (Arecibo, Puerto Rico) were deadly on offense and solid on defense to lead the Minutewomen to their fourth victory of the season (4-2). Llovet had a match-high 17 kills and 17 digs while DeMarte recoded 17 kills and 13 digs. Senior Lauren Vander Veen (Oakland, Calif.) registered 14 kills for UMass and hit for a team-high .273 percentage.
The Minutewomen recorded 72 digs in the match including 10 from sophomore Nitia Small (Los Angeles, Calif.). Junior Jitka Stehnova (Odolena Voda, Czech Republic) added five service aces and 52 assists in the winning effort.
Buffalo received strong play from Lindsay Matikosh with 12 kills and 14 digs. Alexis Boule added 9 kills for the Bulls.
The Minutewomen finished the match with a .201 hitting percentage and six blocks. The Bulls hit for .129 and recorded 11 blocks.
UMass plays its last match of the tournament tonight at 7:00 p.m. against the University of New Hampshire. Buffalo will face off against Dartmouth College at 4:30 p.m.
