UMass Volleyball Defeats Duquesne, 3-1

AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts volleyball team closed out the 2001 season with a 3-1 win over the visiting Dukes of Duquesne (16-10, 8-8 Atlantic 10) this evening in Curry Hicks Cage.
The Minutewomen took advantage of 32 Duke hitting errors and 11 service errors to take the match in four games.
Sophomore Nitia Small (Los Angeles, Calif.) led all scorers with 17 kills. Senior Lymarie Llovet (Arecibo, Puerto Rico) added 12 kills and 14 and Janeen DeMarte (El Paso, Texas) recorded 11 kills on the night. Junior Jitka Stehnova (Odolena Voda, Czech Republic) dished 50 assists and led the defensive effort with 17 digs. Freshman Amy Chan (Lancaster, Pa.) had 12 digs in the UMass victory.
DU was led by Brooke Saunders with 13 kills and 14 digs. Sarah Morrow recorded 12 kills and Sherene Lemonias added 11 kills and 15 digs.
The Minutewomen finish the season with a 15-11 overall record and an 8-8 mark in the A-10.
