Volleyball Defeats New Hampshire, 3-0, to Win UMass Invitational

Amherst, Mass.- The University of Massachusetts volleyball team defeated the University of New Hampshire, 3-0, to win the UMass Invitational this evening at Curry Hicks Cage. The victory improves UMass's record to 5-2 on the season and drops the Wildcats to 4-3.
The Minutewomen earned their fourth win in a row as three players had double-digit kills and the team hit for a combined .328 percentage. Sophomore Nitia Small (Los Angeles, Calif.) recorded a match-high 14 kills followed by seniors Janeen DeMarte (El Paso, Texas) and Lauren Vander Veen (Oakland, Calif.) with 13 and 10, respectively. On defense, freshman Michelle Spaleta (San Pedro, Calif.) set the pace with a match-high 11 digs with senior Lymarie Llovet (Arecibo, Puerto Rico) close behind with nine.
The Wildcats kept at the Minutewomen's heels behind the 12 kill performance of Alyson Coler and the 10 kill mark of Bonnie Wilson. Coler and Jen Williams each recorded nine digs for New Hampshire.
Vander Veen was selected as the UMass Invitational MVP as she terminated 39 kills and hit for an impressive .337 percentage. Also representing UMass on the all-tournament team was Janeen DeMarte who had 48 kills and hit for a .242 percentage. Other selections included New Hampshire's Alyson Coler and Lauren Knight, Buffalo's Lindsay Matikosh and Dartmouth's Andrea Sea.
UMass returns to action Friday, Sept. 14th as they participate in the Seminole Classic hosted by Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla. The Minutewomen will face Bethune-Cookman College on Sept. 14 at 2:00 p.m. and Florida State in the night cap at 7:00 p.m. Tournament play will round out with a match against Manhattan College on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 10:00 a.m. and another vs. Louisiana at Lafayette at 2:00 p.m.
