Volleyball Sweeps Texas Christian at UConn Tourney

Storrs, Conn. - The University of Massachusetts Minutewomen defeated Texas Christian University 3-0 (35-33, 30-24, 30-25) this afternoon at the IKON Husky Classic to even their record at 1-1 on the season. TCU drops to 0-3.
UMass, who struggled offensively in yesterday's season opener, made the necessary adjustments and hit for .247 as a team. Three Minutewomen had kills in double-digits led by senior Lymarie Llovet (Arecibo, Puerto Rico) with a double-double pounding 14 kills and digging 13 balls. Sophomore Nitia Small (Los Angeles, Calif.) and senior Lauren Vander Veen (Oakland, Calif.) had career highs in kills as Small recorded 14 and Vander Veen added 13 in the win.
Defensively, UMass was strong as senior Janeen DeMarte (El Paso, Texas) and freshman Michelle Spaleta (San Pedro, Calif.) each recorded 11 digs. Senior Celia Wiste (Chino Valley, Ariz.) and junior Jitka Stehnova (Odolena Voda, Czech Republic) each had three blocks.
TCU's Marci King kept the Horned Toads in the match, recording 18 kills and posting 14 digs. Dominka Szabo and Allison Lynch added 12 and 10 kills respectively. Texas Christian hit .213 as a team.
UMass returns to action tonight against the University of California at 7:00 p.m. to finish out tournament play. The Cal Bears are 1-0 in the tournament, defeating the University of New Hampshire 3-1.
