Minutemen Compete At Brown Carnival

LINCOLN, N.H. -- The University of Massachusetts men's skiing team placed fouth in the slalom giant slalom while the women took fifth in the slalom and fourth in the giant slalom at the Brown Carnival held at Lincoln, N.H. Junior Ken Thoman (Lebanon, Ohio) shined for the men being the only Minuteman to place in the top 20 in both events with a fourth place in the giant slalom at 1:48.73 and fifth in the slalom (1:19.83). On the women's side, junior Lauren Brodey (Fayetteville, N.Y.) was high scorer for the Minutewomen with a sixth place showing in the slalom with a total time of 1:27.84.
Landing in the top 20 for the Minutemen in the giant slalom were Thoman and junior Rich Granger (Princeton, Mass.) who finished 13th at 1:50.68. The Minutewomen placed two skiers in the top twenty in both events. Besides Brodey, sophomore Carolyn Lewenberg (Newton, Mass.) placed well in the slalom, taking 13th at 1:30.12. Lewenberg topped the Minutewomen in the giant slalom finishing 11th with a total time of 2:16.97. With a season high 15th place in the giant slalom was senior Margaret LaBombard (Queensbury, N.Y.) scoring points for the Minutewomen (2:21.06).
The team standing are as follows: Men's slalom: 1) Plymouth State College, 2) Colby/Sawyer College, 3) Boston College, 4) UMass, 248.91. Men's giant slalom: 1) Colby/Sawyer College, 2) Plymouth State College, 3) Boston College, 4) UMass. Women's slalom: 1) Boston College, 2) Brown University, 3) Plymouth State College, 4)Colby/Sawyer College, 5) UMass. Women's giant slalom: 1) Brown University, 2) Boston College, 3)Colby/Sawyer College, 4) UMass.
UMass skiing returns to the slopes next weekend, Feb. 10th and 11th at Ascutney Mountain, Vt., for the Boston College Carnival.
