Football Places Five On All-Academic Team

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts football program placed five players on the 2001 Atlantic 10 Football Conference's All-Academic Team, as voted by the league's sports information directors.

To qualify for the All-Academic team, a player must carry a grade point average of at least 3.00 and be a starter or key reserve.

Sophomore linebacker Jeremy Cain (Tamarac, Fla.) has a 3.09 grade point average as a Hotel, Restaurant & Travel Administration major. He played in nine games this season, making eight starts, and ranked third on the team with 78 total tackles, including 11 tackles for loss and four sacks.

Senior tight end Eddie Campbell (North Arlington, N.J.) owns a 3.10 grade point average in Sport Management. He played in all 11 games on the season, starting four times, and caught four passes for 20 yards.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Matt Guice (Coral Springs, Fla.) carries a 3.13 grade point average in the College of Arts & Sciences. He started all 11 of UMass' games this season, completing 192 of 394 passes for 2,266 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Sophomore linebacker Mark Kimener (Oakton, Va.) has a 3.13 grade point average in the College of Food & Natural Resources. He played in all 11 games on the year, making eight starts, and ranked second on the team with 83 total tackles, including eight tackles for loss and four sacks.

Junior placekicker Doug White (Claremont, Calif.) owns a 3.75 grade point average in the School of Management. He played in all 11 games and led the team in scoring with 40 points, while converting on seven of 11 field goal attempts and 19 of 23 extra points.

In total, 46 student-athletes were honored from the 11-member conference. There were 23 players on both the offense and the defense.
