Men's Water Polo Advances To The Eastern Championship

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The 18th-ranked University of Massachusetts men's water polo team defeated No. 12 Princeton, 10-7, and No. 15 St. Francis, 8-3, this evening in the Eastern Championships hosted by Princeton University.
In the upset of the Tigers, the Minutemen scored three quick first quarter goals and never looked back. They were led by senior Greg Trayer (Reading, Pa.) who had four goals and two assists. Senior Mike Foley (Tustin, Calif.) netted three goals for UMass, while senior Carlos Ramos (Anasco, Puerto Rico) added two of his own. Senior Adam Moore (Sinking Spring, Pa.) had three assists in the victory. In net, senior J.R. VanderWall (Rockford, Mich.) made nine saves.
Later in the day, UMass outscored St. Francis 4-0 in the first quarter and led 5-1 at the half en route to its 8-3 victory. Moore scored three goals and was the only Minuteman to record a multiple-goal game. Ramos had two assists. VanderWall continued to dominate in net as he stopped 12 St. Francis shots.
The Minutemen will face the winner of the other semifinal game between Harvard and Queens in tomorrow's championship game at 2:00 p.m. The winner will advance to the NCAA Final Four Dec. 1-2, at Stanford University.
