PRINCETON, N.J. -- Senior Greg Trayer (Reading, Pa.) scored three goals to lead the 18th-ranked University of Massachusetts men's water polo team (29-5) to an 8-4 win over 13th-ranked Queens College in today's Eastern Championship game at Princeton University. With the win, the Minutemen captured the Collegiate Water Polo Association's automatic bid into the NCAA Final Four.
Once again, UMass got off to a quick start with two first quarter goals and used strong defense throughout the game to contain the Knights' offensive attack. In addition to Trayer's hat trick, seniors Carlos Ramos (Anasco, Puerto Rico) and Mike Foley (Tustin, Calif.) added a pair of goals apiece for the Minutemen. Ramos also added two assists in the win. Senior Adam Moore (Sinking Spring, Pa.) scored the other goal for the Maroon and White, while adding two assists. Senior goaltender J.R. VanderWall (Rockford, Mich.) was once again a force as he turned aside 10 shots.
In 1999, the last time UMass appeared in the NCAA Tournament, it finished third. The Minutemen have made the third-most NCAA appearances of any Eastern school since adding men's water polo as a varsity sport in 1987.
The NCAA Final Four will be held at the Avery Aquatic Center on the campus of Stanford University, Dec. 1-2.
