Amherst, Mass. - The Minutewomen used a .319 hitting percentage to dominate the visiting Colonials of George Washington this evening and earn the 3-0 sweep to improve their record to 3-3 in the Atlantic 10.

Game one saw the Colonials hold the slight one to two-point advantage through 11-12. The Minutewomen took the lead for good at 13-12 on back-to-back kills by Jitka Stehnova (Odolena Voda, Czech Republic) and Clare Baxter (Miami, Fla.). UMass took its biggest lead of the game at 28-19 and cruised to a 30-23 victory. Stehnova was a perfect four of four in kills in the game while dishing out 12 assists. Baxter and Janeen DeMarte (El Paso, Texas) also recorded four kills in the win.

The Minutewomen led the entirety of game two, hitting for .390. DeMarte and Nitia Small (Los Angeles, Calif.) each collected five kills in the effort while Stehnova tallied four straight points for UMass with two kills and two aces to give the Minutewomen the 25-18 advantage . UMass finished GW off with kills by Lauren Vander Veen (Oakland, Calif.), Small and DeMarte to take the game 30-23.

In game three UMass took advantage of 11 Colonial attack errors to earn the 30-22 victory. DeMarte recorded four of her match-high 13 kills in the game and Small was three of three.

The Minutewomen finished the match lead by DeMarte with 13 kills, Small with 11 and Baxter with 10. Lymarie Llovet (Arecibo, Puerto Rico) anchored the UMass defense, digging 14 balls on the night. Stehnova finished the match with four aces and 38 assists.

GW was led by Sarah Hokom with 11 kills and Molly Law with 10 kills and 10 digs. The loss drops the Colonials to 4-9 on the season and 3-3 in the A-10. The Minutewomen improve to 9-5 overall.

"We were in total control of the match from start to finish," said head coach Bonnie Kenny. "Tonight's win got us back to .500 and was an all-around good match for us."

UMass hits the road next Tuesday, Oct. 9 for an A-10 match against the University of Rhode Island. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
