UMass Volleyball Drops Providence, 3-0

Amherst, Mass.- The University of Massachusetts volleyball team defeated non-conference opponents, Providence College this evening, 3-0, at Curry Hicks Cage. UMass improves to 11-9 overall (4-6 A-10) while the Friars slip to 6-16.
Senior Lauren Vander Veen (Oakland, Calif.) led the Minutewomen offensive, recording six kills in game one to lead UMass to the 30-23 victory. The Maroon and white hit for .355 in the game, terminating 15 kills and committing just two errors. Providence hit .108 in the game, led by Annie Cella with four kills.
Providence battled back in game two, staying even with the Minutewomen through 24-24. UMass sealed the 30-27 win with kills by Vander Veen, Janeen DeMarte (El Paso, Texas) and two service aces by freshman Amy Chan (Lancaster, Pa.).
The Minutewomen surged to a 14-4 led in game three behind ten consecutive UMass points. The Minutewomen maintained the ten-point led throughout the remainder of the game as Nitia Small (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Clare Baxter (Miami, Fla.) provided the offensive punch with a combined nine kills. UMass took the victory 30-21.
Vander Veen led the Minutewomen with 14 kills, followed by Small (10) and Baxter (nine). Small collected eight digs on the night and DeMarte and Lymarie Llovet (Arecibo, Puerto Rico) each chipped in six digs.
The Friars were led by Sarah Katinger with 14 kills and seven digs and Annie Cella with 12 kills and 13 digs. Susan Fanning dished 31 assists in the loss.
UMass returns to Atlantic 10 action this weekend as they travel to face Dayton on Friday, Oct. 26 and Xavier on Saturday, Oct. 27.
