AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore goaltender Ashley Egland (Ilion, N.Y.) recorded her second consecutive shutout to lift the University of Massachusetts to a 4-0 victory over Rhode Island in Atlantic 10 field hockey action tonight.
The Minutewomen opened the scoring at the 27:17 mark of the first half when junior Stacey Blue (Bellingham, Mass.) scored off a pass from senior Kaitlyn Byron (Greenfield, Mass.). Massachusetts added to its lead when junior Erika Whiston (Athol, Mass.) netted an unassisted goal at the 20:37 mark of the opening half.
UMass extended its lead early in the second half when sophomore Kristin Hopwood (Lexington, Mass.) scored her first career goal. The Minutewomen closed out the scoring with 15:15 remaining in the game when senior Lindsay Abbott (Northampton, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal.
Egland made four saves in the cage for the Minutewomen. Over the past four games, Egland has played 300 minutes, made 31 saves and allowed just one goal. She made a career-high 15 saves in her last outing, which was a 2-0 shutout victory over West Chester. Danielle Dangoia made eight saves for Rhode Island.
The victory improves Massachusetts to 6-7 overall on the season and 3-0 in the A-10, while the loss drops Rhode Island to 4-10 overall and 1-2 in the A-10.
The Minutewomen return to action Saturday, Oct. 20, when they host A-10 rival St. Joseph's in a noon time game at Richard F. Garber Field.
