UMass Volleyball Falls To Duquesne, 1-3

Pittsburgh - Pa.- The University of Massachusetts volleyball team dropped its second Atlantic 10 conference match in a row with a 1-3 loss to Duquesne University this evening at the Palumbo Center. The loss slips the Minutewomen to 9-7 overall and 3-5 in the A-10. The Dukes improved to 11-5 overall and 4-3 in the A-10.
DU took a commanding 2-0 lead taking game one 30-22 and game two 30-19 before the Minutewomen regrouped in game three for a 30-22 edge. UMass held a 13-17 lead before extending it to a 25-13 advantage as sophomore Nitia Small (Los Angeles, Calif.) served three consecutive aces to give UMass the advantage.
Game four saw five ties and no more than a three-point lead for either team before the Dukes knotted the score one last time at 25-25. Duquesne took a 28-26 advantage and capped the game with back-to-back blocks for the victory.
Senior Lauren Vander Veen (Oakland, Calif.) led the Minutewomen with 15 kills. Junior Clare Baxter (Miami, Fla.) chipped in 14 kills for a .560 hitting percentage and freshman Carol Mattos (Petropolis, Brazil) added 10 kills in the loss. Senior Janeen DeMarte (El Paso, Texas) led the defensive effort with 10 digs. Junior setter Jitka Stehnova (Odolena Voda, Czech Republic) recorded 48 assists on the night.
DU was led by Sherene Lemonias with 17 kills and added 12 digs while Jacqui Gerlach added 15 kills. Brooke Saunders led the defense with a match-best 14 digs. Setter Sarah Brown recorded 49 assists on the night as well.
UMass returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 16 as they host Harvard in a 7:00 p.m. non-conference match.
