Munice, Ind. -- All-American junior Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany) and senior Lucy Koch (Ipswich, Mass.) each scored a goal and assisted on another as UMass defeated Ball State, 3-1.
Ball State jumped out on top of the Minutewomen early as Freshman Shanna Fritz scored for the Cardinals at 16:29. It didn't take long for UMass to regroup as Bruemmer scored two minutes later to tie it up at 1-1. Koch and Kristen Schmidt (Greenfield, Mass.) added two more goals inside five minutes left in the first half to give UMass the 3-1 lead that would stand for the win.
"We came out slow," said head coach Patty Shea. "It took the goal by Ball State to get us going, I am just glad we got the win."
UMass outshot the Cardinals 24-10 on the day. Senior Zowie Tucker (Neath, South Wales) had five saves as Nina Gruen and Susan McDowell combined to make 12 saves for Ball State.
The Minutewomen return to action tomorrow, Sept. 10, as they play Miami of Ohio at Ball State Turf Field.
