AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass volleyball team will open up the Atlantic 10 campaign this weekend, when it travels to Ohio to take on Dayton and Xavier on Sept. 22 and 23, respectively. The Minutewomen are 3-6 heading into this weekend and are looking to start off the conference schedule in a positive way.
"Obviously this is a huge weekend for us," head coach Bonnie Kenny says. "We can use the strong competition from last weekend, and hope that it carries over into this weekend. There is a sense of urgency right now because we are starting conference play."
The Flyers come into this weekend's play with a 5-4 overall record, while the Musketeers stand at 6-4 this year.
"Dayton and Xavier have both played really good preseason schedules and they have had some success against quality teams," Kenny says. "Dayton has a great balanced-attack. They have a great setter in Carla Muntz. And I don't think it is a team we can out hit, but a team we need to out defend. The key to Xavier is its right-side player Sara Bachus. The team goes where she goes. She's dynamic and is their leading attacker.
"Dayton and Xavier always come at us, so we need to be able to perform. Hopefully, we will have a good weekend, and with the tough preseason we played, we should be ready for anything that comes at us."
Senior Rebecca Hasson (Riverside, Calif.) continues to pace the UMass squad in kills this season, averaging 4.13 kills per game, while junior Lymarie Llovet (Arecibo, Puerto Rico) is leading the team in digs with 2.50 per game.
