AMHERST, Mass. -- Former University of Massachusetts crew members Sarah Lauritzen (Gentofte, Denmark) and Sarah Jones (Stanwood, Wash.) have earned spots on their respective national teams for the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Lauritzen will compete on the women's quad, while Jones will be on the women's eight. This will be both rowers first Olympic games. UMass head coach Jim Dietz will coach the U.S. women's lightweight.
"I have a certain sense of accomplishment and it sends a message that UMass rowing is one of the elite programs in the country," said Dietz. "I think the U.S. team has a very good chance to win the gold medal with Romania being the one to beat."
