Minutewomen Track & Field Takes Third Place At Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Rhianna DaCruz (Pawtucket, R.I.) broke her own UMass pole vault record for the second consecutive week, this timewith a jump of 11' 2", leading UMass to a third place finish at Brown on Saturday.
Rhode Island took the team title with 167.33 points, followed closely by Brown in second place with 165.67 points. UMass finished with 92 points, followed by Providence in fourth, Northeastern in fifth and Southern Connecticut in sixth.
DaCruz's 11'2" leap broke the UMass record of 11', which she set just a week earlier at UConn. Her jump at Brown was good for a tie in second place in the event.
Senior Melissa Ward (Franklinville, N.Y.) was UMass' lone event winner. Ward won the long jump with a leap of 17' 10".
Several Minutewomen placed second in their respective events. Senior Sharon Tillotson (Wantagh, N.Y.) was the runner-up in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:07.83. Freshman Maggie Curry (Mukwonago, Wis.) was second in the discus with a throw of 139' 7". Her throw on Saturday was a new career best and ranks fourth all-time on the UMass charts. Sophomore Neille Giffune (Foxboro, Mass.) took home second place in the javelin. Her throw of 122' 3" is a new career best and ranks second on the all-time UMass charts.
UMass will return to action next weekend at UConn. The Minutewomen will compete in a six team competition starting Friday at 3:00 p.m.
