AMHERST, Mass. -- University of Massachusetts head football coach Mark Whipple has announced the 2000 schedule for the Minutemen. The slate features seven home games, the most for the Minutemen since 1993, and the first home night game in school history, against William & Mary in the season opener on Aug. 31.
"We are very excited about the schedule we will play this fall, especially with so many home games," said Whipple. "The night game against William & Mary is something we are all looking forward to, and it should provide an electric atmosphere for all of our fans. And with the great crowds we have had over the last two seasons, it should provide us with a real advantage to play seven games at McGuirk Stadium."
The Minutemen will open the season with the Thursday night game against William & Mary on Aug. 31. After a week off and a game at Richmond on Sept. 16, UMass returns home to face New Haven, where Whipple formerly coached, for Campus Appreciation Day on Sept. 23. The Minutemen then play host to traditional northeast power Hofstra on Sept. 30, before heading to Northeastern on Oct. 7.
Another two-game home stand begins on Oct. 14 with UMass facing Maine on Family Day, while American International College then comes to town for Band Day on Oct. 21. The Minutemen hit the road to face New Hampshire on Oct. 28, then return to Amherst for Homecoming against Villanova on Nov. 4. UMass concludes the season with a home date against Delaware on Nov. 11 and a road game at Rhode Island on Nov. 18.
The Minutemen are scheduled to open spring practice on Monday, April 10. The annual Spring Game is set for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, with the team banquet to honor the 1999 Atlantic 10 Conference champions taking place at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 7.
