BOSTON, Mass. -- Goaltender Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) made 38 saves, but could not keep the potent Boston University offense from breaking a 1-1 game open early in the third period. The Terriers scored a pair of goals in the opening 35 seconds of the third to gain a 4-2 win giving Boston University (23-8-7) a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three Hockey East quarterfinals. The loss drops UMass to 11-19-5 on the season.
Boston University got on the scoreboard first when Jack Baker scored a power play goal at the 15:55 mark of the first period. Carl Corazzini and John Sabo assisted on the goal. The Terriers continued to put the pressure on the Minutemen, but Helanen kept UMass within one goal heading into the first intermission.
The Terriers controlled most of the play in the second period, but it was the Minutemen who scored the lone goal to knot the game 1-1 at the end of two periods. With the Minutemen shorthanded, Jeff Blanchard (Stouffville, Ontario) broke into the Boston University zone and passed over to Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) in the slot. Turner left the puck for Joey Culgin (Framingham, Mass.), who fired a shot low that beat Terrier goalie Rick DiPietro on the ice. The shorthanded tally was the Minutemen's 10th of the season.
Boston University wasted little time getting on the board in the third as the Terriers scored two goals in the first minute. Corazzini scored a power play goal 17 seconds into the period, followed by Baker's second goal of the game to give the Terriers a 3-1 lead. UMass came back to cut the lead to one when Blanchard scored in the slot with assists going to R.J. Gates (Plainville, Conn.) and Darcy King (Barrie, Ontario). The Terriers regained their two goal lead when Sabo netted a shorthanded goal for the Terriers with a little more than 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
The Minutemen return to action tomorrow night in the second game of the three-game Hockey East quarterfinals series with Boston University. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
