KINGSTON, R.I. - Senior Vic Morency (North Dartmouth, Mass.) shattered the UMass indoor shot put record by two feet on Saturday at the Rhode Island Invitational, winning the event and leading UMass to a second place finish. UMass finished with 161 points, five points behind host Rhode Island.
Morency's throw of 55' 9 3/4" broke Jan Stevens' 1997 record by exactly two feet. Morency has been on a tear this winter, and has now increased his personal best in the shot put by over eight feet since last season. Morency also took home a second place finish in the weight throw with a personal career best toss of 59' 2 1/4", outdistancing his previous best by over three feet. Morency's distance in the weight throw now places him second on the all-time UMass charts.
Sophomore Adrian Zullo (Pompano Beach, Fla.) made his first competition this season a memorable one, running a 6.47 second 55 meter dash and taking home first place. Zullo's time is the fifth fastest 55 meter time in UMass history and automatically qualifies him for the New England and IC4A Championships at the end of the indoor season.
UMass will be back in action on Saturday at the Valentine's Classic in Boston.
