UMass Ski Teams Compete At Smith Carnival

CHARLEMONT, Mass. -- The UMass men's and women's teams have both secured places to compete in the USCSA Regional after their performance at the Smith College Carnival this past weekend. The Minutemen placed third in the slalom and giant slalom, and the Minutewomen finished third in the slalom and second in the giant slalom. UMass qualified as a team on both sides and are permitted to take their five highest point scorers from throughout the regualr season.

The men that qualified for the meet are as follows: freshman Pete Sanford (Queenstown, New Zealand) had the second highest net score of all USCSA competitors in the Osborne Division with 163 points. Sophomore Ken Thoman (Lebanon, Ohio) was fourth in the final standings with 144 points, freshman Beau Gibson (Oakland, Md.) tallied 133 points for ninth, sophomore Rich Granger (Princeton, Mass.) had a net total of 38 points (25th). Also qualifying for USCSA Nationals is junior Jordan Kingdon (East Lansing, Mich.) with a score of eight, landing him 37th in the final regular season standings.

On the women's side, freshman Carolyn Lewenberg (Auburndale, Mass.) was high scorer for UMass during the regular season, tallying 176 points, placing her second out of all women ski racers in the USCSA Osborne Division that earned points for their respective teams. Sophomore Lauren Brodey (Fayetteville, N.Y.) scored 149 points, enough for fifth overall. Sophomore Tina King (Easthampton, Mass.) finished seventh, scoring 146 points while sophomore Ericka Olson (Pittsfield, Mass.) ended the season at 23rd (43 points) and senior Katie Keane (Acton, Mass.) rounded out the top 25 spots with 33 points.

This weekend at the Smith Carnival in the men's slalom, Sanford placed second out of 87 finishers with a total time of 1:09.60. Gibson was sixth at 1:10.67, followed closely by Thoman at seventh (1:10.86) and senior Christian Guertin (Ashburnham, Mass.) placing 37th at 1:17.31. In the giant slalom, Thoman finished seventh as high scorer for UMass at 1:10.86. Sanford placed ninth (1:31.91) and Gibson was 13th (1:32.58). Granger rounded out the top 20 with a total time of 1:34.83.

On the women's side, King placed second out of 64 finishers with a total time of 1:36.23 in the giant slalom. Brodey was fifth at 1:39.15 while Lewenberg also gained Minutewomen points placing 12th at 1:40.22. Olson finished 13th (1:40.32). In the slalom, Lewenberg placed fourth out of 73 ski racers at 1:12.80. Brodey landed in the top ten, finishing sixth at 1:13.61. Rounding out the finishers was King, in 14th place with a total time of 1:15.46.

The top five individual UMass ski racers from both the men and women will compete Sunday and Monday, Feb. 27th and 28th in the United States College Ski Association Regional at Waterville Valley, N.H.
