Hockey Defeats Lowell 5-4 in Overtime

LOWELL, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts sophomore right winger Tim Turner (Saginaw, MI) scored with 14 seconds left in overtime to defeat regional rival UMass-Lowell, 5-4, Friday night at Tsongas Arena. The win improves UMass to 2-3-1 overall and 2-1-0 Hockey East, while the loss drops the River Hawks to 2-3-0 overall and 0-3-0 in Hockey East.
UMass scored early and often in the first period, scoring four goals on the first four shots. Turner scored off assists from junior Martin Miljko (Etobicoke, Ontario) and senior brother Jeff Turner (Saginaw, MI) just one minute and seven seconds into the game. Freshman Scott Horvath (West Redding, CT) gave UMass a 2-0 lead at 7:23 with assists from Jimmy Callahan (Lexington, MA) and fellow freshmen Thomas P?ck (Klagenfurt, Austria). P?ck then assisted on Brad Nizwantowski's (Peabody, MA) power play goal at 9:07 and Jeff Turner set up Callahan's power play goal at 13:33 to cap the first period for the Minutemen.
Lowell scored four unanswered goals in the final two periods of play to force the extra period. River Hawk's Dan Fontas scored with 5:03 left in the third period to tie the game at 4-4.
Junior Mike Johnson (Excelsior, MN) got the win in between the pipes for the Minutemen, stopping 35 shots.
The Minutemen return to action Saturday, Nov. 4, when they host No. 3 New Hampshire at Mullins Center. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
