Men's Gymnastics Places Second at West Point Open

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Junior Andy Leis (Suffield, Conn.) captured two top-five finishes as the University of Massachusetts men?s gymnastics team took second place at the West Point Open on Jan. 7 in West Point, N.Y. The Minutemen scored a 213.900 to fall behind Penn State, which placed first with a mark of 222.850. Temple and Army finished third and fourth, respectively, with scores of 212.400 and 208.500.
Leis came in second on the horizontal bar with a score of 9.400 and placed third in the floor exercise with a mark of 9.550. Junior Bryan McNulty (Springfield, Va.) finished fourth on floor at 9.500. Leis was the top UMass finisher on the pommel horse, placing sixth with a score of 9.300. Freshman Brian Peterson (Albuquerque, N.M.) came in seventh at 9.200. Senior Jeff LaVallee (Stafford Springs, Conn.) led the Minutemen on the rings, finishing sixth with a mark of 9.350. McNulty placed seventh on the vault at 9.350.
UMass will compete in the individuals portion of the tournament on Jan. 8.
