LOWELL, Mass. - UMass Lowell sophomore Tom Rouleau scored what proved to be the game winner just after the first intermission, leading the Riverhawks to a 3-0 shutout victory over the University of Massachusetts in Hockey East action Sunday afternoon. UMass drops to 10-13-3, 4-10-2 in league play, while the River Hawks improve to 8-16-1, 4-10-1 in Hockey East.

After a scoreless first period, Rouleau put the Riverhawks up 1-0 just 40 seconds into the second period with a wrist shot from right in front of the UMass net. UMass Lowell went up 2-0 at the 11:18 mark of the second period when a Marc Concannon shot squirted past UMass goaltender Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) just five seconds after the expiration of a Lowell power play opportunity.

Junior Brad Rooney add the third goal for the Riverhawks at the 15:09 mark of the third period, getting assists from Chris Bell and John Campbell.

UMass senior Kevin Poulin (Lewiston, Maine) had UMass? best scoring chance with just over four minutes left in the second period on a clear breakaway, but UMass Lowell?s sophomore netminder Cam McCormick got a piece of the shot, deflecting it wide.

UMass returns to action on Friday, Feb 4, hosting Boston University in the Mullins Center. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
