UMass Track & Field Athletes Win Atlantic 10 Honors

AMHERST, Mass. - Senior Vic Morency (North Dartmouth, Mass.) was named the Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week on Tuesday. The honor follows Morency's outstanding performance at the New England Challenge Cup Trials on Saturday. Morency placed second in both the shot put and the weight throw on Saturday in Hanover, N.H. In the Shot Put, Morency out-distanced his previous career best by over a foot with a throw of 49' 9.75". In the 35 lb. weight throw competition, Morency equaled his previous career best with a throw of 55' 9". Both marks automatically qualify Morency for the New England Championships in Boston on the 25th and 26th of February.
Freshman Stefan Russ (Neuhausen, Germany) was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, January 16. In his first collegiate competition, Russ placed third in both the high jump and the 200 meter dash at the New England Challenge Cup Trials. Russ ran a 23.17 second 200 meters and eclipsed the 6'4" mark in the high jump. Both men will be back in action on Friday at the New England Challenge Cup Finals in Boston.
