Women's Tennis Defeats St.John's, 8-1

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - The University of Massachusetts women?s tennis team experienced a moment to remember today when it conquered St. John?s in an 8-1 decision, on the U.S. Open courts in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. The Minutewomen (1-1) capture their first win of the fall season, while the Red Storm fall to 0-1. Head coach Judy Dixon is now just nine victories short of win No. 100 in her eight seasons at UMass. Dixon stands at 131-62 overall and 91-48 with the Minutewomen.
"We played well for our first away match," assistant coach Debbie Ginn said. "Helena did particularly well considering she was playing with a wrist injury."
UMass won all of its singles matches in the victory, and all but one win came in straight sets for the Minutewomen. Senior Ola Gerasimova (Liatvia Ridge, Russia) breezed past Rohika Hardas at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0, while sophomore Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) won easily in the No. 2 slot over Corina Cetateanu, 6-1, 6-1. Sophomores Annie Hamilton (Plano, Texas) and Robyn Lebovitz (Marietta, Ga.) and freshman Beth Ebert (Westford, Mass.) also picked up victories in their respective singles positions.
UMass won two out of its three doubles matches to close out the match. The No. 1 duo of Gerasimova and Hamilton had to take it all the way to a tie-breaker in their 9-8(7-3) victory over Hardas and Cetateanu. The pair of Lebovitz and Stammen cruised past Mitchell and Efstathiou in the No. 2 slot, 8-2. Ebert and Horak defaulted to Jackson and Blanaru in No. 3 doubles.
The Minutewomen are next in action on Oct. 4, at Dartmouth at 2 p.m.
