AMHERST, Mass. - Adam Black (San Jose, Calif.) stole the ball and pushed it past a defender, then past Washington goalie James Dickinson for the game-winner eight minutes into overtime to give UMass a 3-2 upset win over #12 Washington in the final round of the UMass Soccer Classic at Totman Field on Sunday afternoon. The goal was Black?s second of the day, and he was named the tournament?s Most Valuable Player.
UMass (5-3) led 2-0 at halftime on goals by Black and Seth Lilburn (Boonton Township, N.J.). Washington, however, would not let UMass steal the game so easily. Kai Carroll struck off a cross from Mark Hogenhout with just under ten minutes to go to cut the lead to one, and then tied the game just over two minutes later, taking another pass from Hogenhout. The Huskies (3-3-1) had a chance to potentially win the game when Wes Hart stepped up to take a penalty kick with just over five minutes remaining, but senior goalkeeper Todd Fowler (Clifton Park, N.Y.) made an incredible diving save to keep the Minutemen alive. The save earned Fowler, who made a total of seven saves on the day, the Florence Savings Bank ?Classic Save of the Tournament?. On the other side, Dickinson made four saves in defeat for Washington.
The Minutemen will open Atlantic 10 Conference play next Saturday night at 5:00 p.m. at Rhode Island.
