MOTOROLA INVITATIONAL: UMass finished 3-1 at the Motorola Invitational this past weekend from Sept. 10-11 in Amherst, Mass. The Minutewomen defeated Seton Hall in their first match of the tournament, 15-4, 15-7, 15-12. Senior Kari Hogancamp (Huntington Beach, Calif.) posted a double-double in the victory with 16 kills and 14 digs. Senior Jill Meyers (Huntington Beach, Calif.) added 11 kills and seven digs. Junior Rebecca Hasson (Riverside, Calif.) tallied six blocks. In match two, UMass took on New Hampshire, winning in straight games, 15-6, 15-12, 15-4. Hogancamp and sophomore Janeen DeMarte (El Paso, Texas) both registered double-doubles in the win. Hogancamp posted 11 kills and 14 digs, while DeMarte tallied 12 kills along with 11 digs. Sophomore Heather Holtsberg (Wheaton, Ill.) registered 44 assists at setter. The Minutwomen swept Southern Mississippi in match number three, 15-9, 15-13, 15-4. DeMarte led UMass with 12 kills and nine digs. UMass fell to Michigan State in the championship match of the tournament, 5-15, 12-15, 11-15. Meyers paced everyone with 15 kills and 12 digs.

ALL-TOURNEY TEAM: Both Hogancamp and Meyers were named to the All-Tournament Team for their performances during the four matches. Hogancamp averaged 4.00 kills and 4.17 digs per game, in addition to posting seven service aces. Meyers tallied 4.33 kills and 3.00 digs along with eight blocks.

UP NEXT: The Minutewomen will open play in the Atlantic 10 season this weekend with matches against Dayton and Xavier at 7 p.m. in Curry Hicks Cage on Sept. 17 and 18, respectively. Dayton is 3-5 this season and is riding a four-match losing streak, the most recent loss against North Carolina on Sept. 11. Sierra Ashley leads the Flyers with 4.00 kills and 2.41 digs per game. UMass leads this series 5-3. Xavier is 6-2 in 1999 and is coming off a 3-1 victory over UC-Irvine on Sept. 11. Jill Hampton is averaging 3.57 kills and 2.62 digs per game this season, while Beth Osterday tallies 3.48 and 3.32 digs per game. The Minutewomen lead this series 6-2.

1,000 KILLS AND 1,000 DIGS CLUB: Hogancamp tallied her 1000th career kill versus Michigan State, becoming just the third player in UMass history to record both 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs, joining former Minutewomen standouts, Dionne Nash (1,673 kills, 1,390 digs) and Lesley Nolan (1,424 kills, 1,483 digs.). She now has career totals of 1,008 kills and 1,551 digs. Meyers tallied 36 digs this past weekend, and is now 26 digs shy of 1,000. She has 1,345 career kills.

CLOSING IN ON 300: Head coach Bonnie Kenny (Tennessee ?84) is in her seventh-year at UMass and needs just two wins for 300 in her career. Kenny is 295-218 overall (.575) in 15 seasons and 124-81 (.605) while with the Minutewomen. She has carried UMass to four Atlantic 10 semifinal appearances and was named the A-10 Coach of the Year in 1996.

MOVING ON UP: Meyers tied former UMass player, Rachel Sky, for fourth on the school?s career list for matches with double-figure digs (44). She currently ranks in the top five on 14 school career lists. Hogancamp is in the top five on 11 UMass career lists.

TWICE AS NICE: DeMarte recorded back-to-back double-doubles against New Hampshire and Southern Mississippi on Sept. 10 and 11, respectively. She tallied 32 kill and 33 dig totals for the entire tournament.

IN THE CLASSROOM: During the 1998-99 academic year, 10 out of 11 players were named to the UMass Athletic Director?s Honor Roll List for having grade point averages of 3.0 or better. Collectively, the Minutewomen posted a 3.258 team GPA.
