NCAA NATIONAL QUALIFIERS: UMass qualified two individuals
to the NCAA National Championships this weekend in State College, Pa.
Freshman Andy Leis (Suffield, Conn.) qualified on the pommel horse,
after placing third on the event at the NCAA East Regional with a
9.650. Fellow freshman Bryan McNulty (Springfield, Va.) also
qualified for the meet on floor exercise, scoring a 9.600 at the East
Regional to place 10th. McNulty had been an alternate for the
competition following the regional and qualified after Penn State's
Mike Dutka withdrew with an ankle injury
NCAA EAST REGIONAL RECAP: Eight Minutemen competed as
individuals at the NCAA East Regional. Junior Stephen Pryor (Clifton
Park, N.Y.) and sophomore Jeff LaVallee (Stafford Springs, Conn.)
competed in the all-around, placing 12th and 13th, respectively.
Also competing for UMass were senior Michael Sangirardi (Levittown,
N.Y.), juniors Phil Lieberman (Teaneck, N.J.) and Mike Plourde
(Amesbury, Mass.) and freshmen Clayton Kent (Exeter, N.H.), Andy
Leis and Bryan McNulty. Ohio State won the meet, followed by
Illinois and Iowa all of whom qualified for the NCAA National
Championships.
HEAD COACH ROY JOHNSON: Johnson is in his 20th season as
head coach of the Minutemen. Sporting a 152-82 overall record, UMass
has captured 14 of the last 15 New England Championships and has
twice won the ECAC Championships. The winningest men's gymnastics
coach in UMass history, Johnson was named NCAA East Region Coach of
the Year in 1997.
