THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Minutewomen split a pair of matches last weekend at home to complete the 1999 campaign. UMass defeated Virginia Tech on Friday night, 15-7, 15-0, 15-7, with senior Kari Hogancamp (Huntington Beach, Calif.) leading the way with 12 kills and 13 digs on the night. On Saturday, the Minutewomen fell in a five-game heartbreaker to George Washington, 15-9, 11-15, 6-15, 15-11, 15-9, which cost UMass a berth in the Atlantic 10 postseason tournament. Hogancamp again paced the squad with 16 kills and 25 digs.
ATLANTIC 10 FINAL STANDINGS: UMass fell one win short of a berth in the Atlantic 10 postseason tournament and finished in fifth place. Temple finished in first place at 16-2 in the conference, while both Rhode Island and Xavier tied for second place with a 13-5 record. George Washington finished in fourth at 11-7.
SENIOR SALUTE: Hogancamp finished her UMass career in the top five on 17 Minutewomen career and season lists, including ranking first in digs, digs per game and in matches with 10-plus digs and 20-plus digs. She ranked fourth in kills and third in service aces and holds the top four single-season digs per game mark at UMass. She has led the nation in digs for the past eight weeks with 5.18 digs per game. Hogancamp and senior Jill Meyers (Huntington Beach, Calif.) both became members of the 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs club this season, becoming just the third and fourth players, respectively, to accomplish the feat. Meyers completes her collegiate career in the top five on 24 Minutewomen career and season lists, including ranking first in kills, hitting percentage, block assists, total blocks and in matches with 10-plus and 20-plus kills. She holds the best single-season hitting percentage with a .308 percentage. Meyers was recently named to the GTE Academic All-District I Team and is now eligible for the Academic All-America National Team recognition.
MILESTONE MANIA: Junior Rebecca Hasson (Riverside, Calif.) collected a team-high nine blocks against the Colonials, which set a new school single-season record for total blocks with 129 blocks for the season. Hasson also moved into fourth on UMass? all-time blocks list with 249, replacing Rachel Sky (1993-95).
CAREER-HIGH ALERT: Freshman Jennifer Davis (Ventura, Calif.) tallied a career-high 11 kills versus Virginia Tech on Friday night. Davis upped that career-high three more on Saturday night versus George Washington with 14 kills.
ON HEAD COACH BONNIE KENNY: Head coach Bonnie Kenny (Tennessee ?84) recorded career win No. 300 at Fairfield on Sept. 21. Kenny is 311-227 overall (.578) in 16 seasons and 140-91 (.606) in seven years with the Minutewomen. The 1996 A-10 Coach of the Year, Kenny has carried UMass to four Atlantic 10 semifinal appearances.
