PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - UMass junior tailback Marcel Shipp (Paterson, N.J.) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference?s Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced this morning by the conference office.

Shipp carried the ball 35 times for 210 yards and three touchdowns, all of them coming in the second half, in UMass? 25-16 win over William & Mary on Saturday afternoon in Williamsburg, Va. In the process, the Walter Payton Award finalist passed Rene Ingoglia on the career rushing chart, making him the school?s career leader in rushing yards with 4,728. In addition, he moved into second place on the all-time Atlantic 10 career rushing list behind New Hampshire?s Jerry Azumah (1995-98). Azumah, who now plays for the NFL?s Chicago Bears, ran for 6,193 yards during his career. Shipp now has 1,430 yards on the year, and has 17 rushing touchdowns. Shipp?s 210 yards marks the third time this season he has rushed for 200 or more yards in a game, and it is also his seventh career 200-yard rushing performance.

Shipp and the Minutemen return to action this Saturday at McGuirk Alumni Stadium for their final home game of the 1999 regular season. The Minutemen will host arch-rival UConn at 12:30 p.m., in a game that will be televised on Connecticut Public Television.
