STORRS, Conn. - Marya McAndrew scored both goals for No. 2 Connecticut to lead the Huskies to a 2 1 win over the University of Massachusetts in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Field Hockey tournament on Sunday afternoon. UMass concludes its season at 15-9, while the Huskies improve to a perfect 23-0.
McAndrew got the Huskies on the scoreboard early when she knocked in a loose ball in a scramble in front of the net just 4:15 into the contest. McAndrew then gave UConn a 2-0 lead midway through the half when she picked up a loose rebound off of a UMass defender and hit it in for the score with 16:30 left in the half. UMass finally broke into the scoring column with 4:13 left in regulation when sophomore back Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany) connected on a penalty corner situation to pull the Minutewomen within one. UMass attacked hard for the final four minutes of regulation and earned a penalty corner in the final two minutes, but was unable to pull even and force the overtime.
UMass goaltender Zowie Tucker (Neath, South Wales) made three saves in the contest, while Danielle Vile stopped eight for the Huskies.
The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak for the Minutewomen who advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time since 1993 with their 2-1 overtime win over Boston University on Saturday.
