AMHERST, Mass. - Senior Adam Black (San Jose, Calif.) broke a 1-1 tie at 50:38, heading in a 50-yard serve from senior Jonathan Bibb (London, England) to lead the UMass men?s soccer team to a 2-1 win over La Salle at Totman Field on Friday afternoon.
La Salle (7-8, 4-4 Atlantic 10) scored first when Bill Blesi knocked in a loose ball in front of the UMass net at 42:34. UMass countered just under two minutes into the second half when junior Kyle Biedenbach (Camp Hill, Pa.) finished off a series of passes from Matt Christy (Paxton, Mass.) and Black. Just under four minutes later, Black headed in the game-winner over the reach of outstretched La Salle goalkeeper Don Tuohey. Tuohey made five saves in defeat for the Explorers.Senior Todd Fowler (Clifton Park, N.Y.) made three saves
The win pulls UMass (11-5, 6-2 Atlantic 10) temporarily into a tie with Duquesne for second place in the Atlantic 10. The Minutemen will host Fordham in their final home game of the regular season on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. It will also be Senior Day, as the Minutemen will honor their six seniors: Black, Fowler, Bibb, John Burr (Springfield, Mass.), James Redmond (Springfield, Mass.) and Todd Baron (Albertson, N.Y.).
