John Nunnelly started his coaching career at the University of Massachusetts as the Head Women’s Swimming and Diving Coach in 1977, a position he held for three years as he completed a master’s degree in business administration. Nunnelly left the program to pursue a 30-year career in the Software Industry. 

After retiring from his software career in 2011, Nunnelly returned to the Massachusetts program as a volunteer assistant coach, working exclusively with the distance freestylers.

In twelve seasons as the distance coach Nunnelly has worked with all ten of the All-Time Top–10 program best times in the Men’s 1650 free, nine of the Top-10 in the 1000 free and nine of the Top-10 in the 500 free. For the Women’s program, he personally coached six of the All-Time Top-10 in the 1650 free and the 1000 free as well as seven of the Top-10 in the 500 Free.

During his tenure, Nunnelly coached seven Atlantic Ten conference championship performances. Chris Inglis had back-to-back wins in the 1650 free in 2011 and 2012. Alessandro Bomprezzi won the 1650 free in 2015, and in the following year, won a pair of gold medals in the 500 and 1650 free, both breaking A-10 records. In 2020 and 2021, Tyler Pidde posted back-to-back victories in the 1650 free. In addition, Nunnelly was part of the coaching staff that achieved four Atlantic Ten Conference Championships.

Nunnelly was a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine academy in 1976, where he earned NCAA All-American honors in two events, the 400 IM and the 800 free relay.
