The University of Massachusetts women's basketball assistant coach Chris Wielgus (pronounced: well-gus) begins her third season on the Minutewomen staff and second as an assistant coach in 2015-16. Wielgus has more than three decades of experience coaching women's basketball; including 30 seasons as a head coach at the NCAA Division I level.

"I love to teach and I can't wait to work with our remarkable student-athletes," Wielgus said of the opportunity to return to the coaching ranks. "This is a great time to be a part of UMass women's basketball. There is a lot of fun to be had and I am grateful to Coach Dawley for this opportunity."

Wielgus' spent the 2013-14 season as the Director of Basketball Operations, where her main responsibility was overseeing the day-to-day functionality of the program. Wielgus shifted into an assistant coaching role in 2014-15 and helped guide the Minutewomen alongside Dawley and fellow assistants Jen MacAulay and Yolanda Griffith. Through their combined efforts during 2014-15, the coaching staff led UMass women's basketball to the second round of the Atlantic 10 Championship while the squad produced its most victories since the 2008-09 campaign.

"Coach Wielgus is simply one of the best in the business," Dawley said. "She is a professional who knows the game, knows how to teach and loves working with the student-athletes."

An elite coach at Fordham (1991-93) and Dartmouth (1976-84; 1993-2013), Wielgus recorded 12 Ivy League Championships, one Patriot League Title, seven NCAA Tournament appearances and a pair of WNIT berths. Wielgus finished her tenure with the Big Green as the winningest head coach in the history of Dartmouth women's basketball as she amassed 393 victories and 20 winning seasons over 28 campaigns at the helm of the program.

Dawley and Wielgus previously worked together on the Dartmouth staff for 10 seasons from 1993-2003. Dawley was an assistant coach under Wielgus from 1993-97 before Wielgus promoted Dawley to associate head coach in anticipation of the 1997-98 season. Together, the duo helped Dartmouth to a trio of NCAA Tournament appearances and 153 victories before Dawley took over as the head coach at Vermont in 2003.
