Jeff Smith joined the University of Massachusetts Athletics Department in July, 2001 and was recently promoted into his current role as Deputy Athletic Director for External Operations in November, 2021.
Additionally, Smith is currently the sport program administrator for ice hockey, men’s lacrosse and rowing. Previously, Smith was the Sr. Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations (2017-2021) and had oversight of the sports medicine, sports performance, behavioral health and wellness and student athlete development units. He served in the role of Deputy Title IX Coordinator as well as the Athletic Department’s liaison to the Dean of Students Office. Smith filled the role of sport program administrator for the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs from 2005-16. He was in that same role with rowing from 2005-18. Smith served on the NCAA Division 1 Rowing committee (2014-18) and served as chair in his final year. Prior to moving into an administrative role, Smith served as the day-to-day athletic trainer for the ice hockey program for nine seasons after working as the head athletic trainer with the football team for the initial seven years of his tenure at the university. Smith came to the University of Massachusetts from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he worked for three years. Smith spent his first year at UCLA as an assistant athletic trainer (men’s basketball and tennis), before being promoted to associate head athletic trainer in 1999. During his last two seasons, he served as the athletic trainer for the football and men's and women's track and field teams, in addition to being the director of UCLA's student athletic trainer internship program. Prior to his time at UCLA, Smith spent five seasons at the University of Denver, including four years as director of sports medicine and head athletic trainer. He oversaw the rehabilitation and welfare of athletes in all 18 of Denver's varsity sports, while Smith also worked directly with the ice hockey team. Smith previously worked at the University of Massachusetts from 1991-93 as a graduate assistant athletic trainer. He worked with the Men's Soccer and Baseball teams while simultaneously serving as a teaching assistant in the Department of Exercise Science. A 1991 graduate of UCLA with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology, Smith earned his master's degree in exercise science from UMass in 1993. He is married to Justine and has three sons, Brendan, Ryan and Jake.
