After overseeing the defensive line and outside linebackers for the previous three seasons at Akron, Nyeem Wartman joined the Minutemen football staff in January 2025 as the defensive line coach.
During his first season at Massachusetts, Wartman coached Marques White to an All-MAC Second Team Conference honor and a NEFWA All-Region Team selection. White totaled 50 tackles in 2025 for the Minutemen, including 18 solo and 32 assisted. He posted a team-leading 11 tackles for loss and a team-best five sacks.
At Akron, Wartman helped lead a defense that ranked among the nation's best, finishing in the top 45 nationally in five statistical categories and the top 25 in two during the 2023 season. The Zips ranked 14th in first-down defense and 31st in total defense, while Wartman coached First Team All-MAC defensive end CJ Nunnally.
Before Akron, Wartman spent two seasons as defensive line coach at New Hampshire, helping the Wildcats win the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association championship and advance to the second round of the FCS playoffs. He coached two Associated Press FCS All-Americans and an All-CAA selection during his tenure.
Prior to New Hampshire, Wartman served as a defensive graduate assistant at Mississippi State from 2018-19.
A standout linebacker at Penn State from 2012-16, Wartman helped the Nittany Lions win the 2016 Big Ten championship. He was named to the Butkus Award Preseason Watch List in 2016, earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2013 and was one of just six true freshmen to see game action in 2012.
A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Wartman earned a bachelor's degree in telecommunications from Penn State in 2015 and a master's degree in workforce education leadership from Mississippi State in 2019.
