Season at Massachusetts: Eighth
The 2026 season will be Matt Layman’s eighth with the Minutemen, having spent the previous three seasons as the tight ends coach (2023-25) after serving in offensive analyst and graduate assistant roles for four seasons.
Layman’s tight end group is one of the deepest position groups for the Minutemen in 2026, including 2026 Phil Steele Preseason MAC Third Team selection Reece Adkins, who returns after battling through injuries in his first season at UMass in 2025. Layman worked with Josiah Johnson, who earned Second Team All-Independent Honors in 2022, and Gino Campiotti, a 2023 Phil Steele Postseason All-Independent Conference Second Team honoree. In the 2023 season, Layman helped the Minutemen offense improve 85 percent in point production year-over-year.
Layman worked with the offensive line in 2021 that paved the way for running back Ellis Merriweather to become the Minutemen's first 1,000-yard rusher in the FBS era. He also spent time working with the tight ends and quarterbacks upon his arrival at Massachusetts in March of 2019.
Prior to UMass, Layman spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Westminster College, primarily working with the quarterbacks. During his tenure, he helped develop two all-conference quarterbacks, including one who finished second in program history in career passing yards and touchdown passes. He also served as head coach and offensive coordinator for the junior varsity team.
Layman played quarterback at Robert Morris from 2011-12 before transferring to Mars Hill, where he was a team captain and earned all-conference honors in 2015. That season, he led the South Atlantic Conference in passing efficiency and ranked second in touchdown passes.
Layman earned his bachelor's degree from Mars Hill in 2015.
