University of Massachusetts Athletics and newly appointed Director of Sports Performance Brian Phillips announced the hiring of Darren Mustin as a Sports Performance Coach on Wed., Jan 24. In his role with the Maroon and White, Mustin will assist Phillips with strength and conditioning programming for football student-athletes, with a focus on the offensive and defensive line, tight end and linebacker position groups.
"I am very excited and blessed to have this opportunity at the University of Massachusetts," Mustin said. "The main reason why I chose to come here is Brian Phillips. I had worked with Brian previously at Army West Point and his belief in me and his belief in this program were the determining factors that brought me here. We have goals in mind for this team and we believe that those goals are highly obtainable."
Mustin joins the Minutemen following an assistant strength and conditioning coach tenure at the University of Nebraska, where he also worked with the football program. He was responsible for the development and completion of a Nebraska Football Pro Day program for student-athletes working to further their football careers at the professional level.
"Immediately upon accepting this position, my first call went to Darren Mustin and I started the recruiting process to get him on board," Phillips said. "Darren was the best coach I could hire for this position and I couldn't be more excited that he wanted to be a part of our Sports Performance staff at UMass.
"Darren offers a unique skill set what sets him apart," Phillips continued. "He has playing experience at the highest level of college football (Alabama), while also having a tremendous ability to create relationships with student-athletes. The positive energy that Darren exudes daily, in addition to his understanding of the demands of college football, makes him a vital addition to our UMass Sports Performance staff."
Mustin worked alongside Phillips at Army, where Mustin served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach from Jan., 2014 - May, 2016. In his position with the Black Knights, he held similar responsibilities to his tenure at Nebraska, as he also coordinated football sports performance efforts at Army.
Prior to his arrival at West Point, Mustin was an assistant strength and conditioning coach at USC. He trained members of the Trojan football program while he simultaneously oversaw the creation of the 2014 NCAA National Champion men's tennis program's strength and conditioning directive.
Mustin's first sports performance opportunity at the collegiate level came at Dartmouth College, where he served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach and the department's interim head strength coach during a two-year tenure.
In addition to his collegiate work, Mustin held three distinct roles with D1 Sports Training, as the organization's certified strength and speed coach (Nashville, Tenn., 2008-10), facility coordinator and head strength and speed coach (Huntsville, Ala., 2012-13) and head strength coach for NFL Combine training (Nashville, Tenn., 2013).
Mustin is a 2007 graduate of the University of Alabama, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Environmental Studies while a student-athlete of the Crimson Tide football program in 2006 and 2007. After he was a walk-on during the 2006 season, Mustin earned a scholarship before the 2007 season, was named co-captain of the squad and earned the team's "Most Inspirational" and Bear Bryant awards.
