Brian Smith was hired by the New York Jets as a quality control coach in 2007.
Brian Smith spent three seasons on Don Brown[apos]s coaching staff, the final two as wide receivers coach in 2005-06. In his first as a coach at UMass in 2004, he worked with the linebackers and was in charge of substitution personnel.
Smith graduated cum laude from UMass in 2001 with a bachelor[apos]s degree in accounting. He was a three-year starter and four-year letterwinner for the Minutemen as a strong safety and cornerback from 1997-2000, totaling 214 career solo tackles, 306 total tackles, 23 tackles for loss, 23 pass breakups and eight interceptions. Smith received first team All-Atlantic 10, All-New England and All-ECAC honors as a senior, when he also served as team captain. In addition, he was a three-time Academic All-Atlantic 10 and Academic All-District selection, while being named to the Division I-AA Athletic Directors Academic All-Star team twice. Smith was a starter on UMass[apos] 1998 team which won the national championship, and the 1999 squad which claimed the Atlantic 10 Conference crown.
A native of Wilmington, Del., Smith resides in Amherst.
