Athletic Nutrition Services
Molly Barnes and James Bronner are the dietitians affiliated with University Health Services who provide nutrition services for all UMass student-athletes. Their UMass Athletics on-site office is located at Boyden Room 038. They counsel individuals and groups on daily nutrition for health and sport; translating the latest scientific evidence into practical sports nutrition recommendations, serving as a food and nutrition resource for athletes, coaches, athletic trainers and providing nutrition education for athletic teams.
Sports Nutrition services include:
- Individual counseling for student-athletes focusing on peak performance through good nutrition.
- Nutrition evaluation and diet analysis with suggestions for dietary enhancement.
- Counsel athletes on achieving and maintaining a level of body mass, body fat and muscle mass that is consistent with good health and high performance.
- Provide counseling on hydration protocols.
- Address nutritional challenges to performance, such as food allergies, bone mineral disturbances, gastrointestinal disturbances, and iron-deficiency anemia.
- Provide information to the athlete about optimal nutrition for recovery from illness or injury.
- Coordinate nutritional care as a member of the multidisciplinary sports medicine team.
- Work in team consultation with doctors, therapists and athletic trainers to support and counsel student-athletes who have eating disorders.
Appointments to meet with Barnes or Bronner to discuss nutrition topics can be made by signing up on the door in Boyden Building Room 038. Office hours in Boyden are Wednesday from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. and Thursdays from Noon through 4 p.m. Other times are available at University Health Services and can be scheduled by calling 413-577-5101.
