Sept. 5, 2002

Amherst, Mass. -- University of Massachusetts football broadcasts will have a new flagship station in 2002, but a familiar broadcast team will again bring the action to fans throughout the Commonwealth, beginning with Saturday's 1 p.m. season opener against Central Connecticut State.

Holyoke's WRNX-100.9 FM will serve as the new flagship station of UMass football, men's basketball and ice hockey broadcasts, replacing Northampton's WHMP. WRNX will originate and deliver the games to fans throughout the Pioneer Valley, and will also be the radio home for the Mark Whipple, Steve Lappas and Don Cahoon weekly radio programs, which will all air from Amherst's Hangar Pub & Grill.

Other stations that will carry the football games this fall include Pittsfield's WBRK-101.7 FM, Ware's WARE-1250 AM, Lowell/Boston's WCAP-980 AM and Marshfield/Boston's WATD FM 95.9. All broadcasts begin 30 minutes prior to kickoff with the pregame show.

In addition, fans can get the games and the coaches shows over the internet at www.umassathletics.com. The UMass website will be enhanced this year with Gametracker, which will allow fans to receive in-game statistical updates and play-by-play direct from the McGuirk Stadium pressbox. The Gametracker will also be available on select road games.

Bob Behler begins his fourth season as the play-by-play voice of the Minutemen, and will be joined in the booth by former UMass coach Bob Pickett and host Eric Kopf of WBRK. Behler and Jack Leaman, a broadcast duo which received the 2001 Associated Press Award for play-by-play in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, will be paired together on Minuteman basketball broadcasts. UMass hockey will be called by WRNX's Donnie Moorhouse and Brock Hines.

The Mark Whipple Show begins its weekly run on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m., from the Hangar Pub & Grill, located at 55 University Drive in Amherst. All of Coach Whipple's shows will be on Thursday evenings, with one exception (Nov. 4), and can be heard either live on WRNX or over the internet at www.umassathletics.com.

The first Don Cahoon Show is slated for Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m., also at the Hangar, while the first Steve Lappas Show of the 2002-03 season will be on Monday, Nov. 11, also at 7 p.m. Like Whipple's show, the Cahoon and Lappas programs can be heard live on either WRNX or at www.umassathletics.com.
