UMass Places Second In Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Cup Final Standings

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of Massachusetts placed second in the race for the 1999-2000 Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Cup, finishing the year only eight points behind first place Virginia Tech. UMass also took home the women's championship for the fourth year in a row, while Virginia Tech earned the men's championship for the fourth time in as many years.
UMass won the women's title by earning five championships this year - women's cross country, field hockey, women's lacrosse (tie), women's rowing, and softball in tallying 95 points. Overall, Massachusetts placed second with 153.5 points, followed by Rhode Island (115.0), Temple (107.0), Dayton (95.0), George Washington (94.5), St. Joseph's (88.0), Duquesne (82.0), St. Bonaventure (81.5), Xavier (77.0), La Salle (75.5), and Fordham (47.5).
In all, Virginia Tech shared two regular season titles and won eight tournament crowns in amassing 161.5 points. The Hokies ended the women's lacrosse season in a three-way tie with Massachusetts and Temple for first place, and tied George Washington for the Atlantic 10's best baseball record. Virginia Tech also won tournament championships in baseball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, men's indoor track & field, and men's and women's outdoor track & field. Their 80.5 men's points are an Atlantic 10 record and their 81.0 women's points were second to Massachusetts.
Rhode Island won men's golf and the men's soccer regular season and tournament titles, Temple was the regular season East division champion in men's basketball, won the women's volleyball regular season and tournament titles, and shared the women's lacrosse regular season crown, Dayton took the Atlantic 10 West in men's basketball, as well as winning the women's soccer regular season and tournament crowns, Xavier won the tournament title in women's basketball, George Washington won women's gymnastics and the Atlantic 10 West in women's basketball, St. Joseph's won the Atlantic 10 East division in women's basketball, La Salle was victorious in men's cross country, and St. Bonaventure won its first Atlantic 10 East division crown in baseball.
