Eleven Athletes Named to A-10 Winter Academic All-Conference Teams

AMHERST, Mass. -- A league-high-tying 11 University of Massachusetts student-athletes from its seven winter sports team have been selected to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference team.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of at least a 3.00 and be a starter or key reserve on his/her team. Voting is conducted by the A-10's sports information directors and the number of players selected to a team reflects the standard-sized team in that sport. Duquesne also placed 11 student-athletes on the seven teams.

The UMass women's gymnastics team, which placed second at the A-10 meet, had two athletes on the six-member team, senior Jobi Dan'Sy (Philadelphia, Pa.) and senior Mary Moore (Coral Springs, Fla.). Dan'Sy owns a 3.82 gpa in French Studies, while Moore has a 3.68 gpa in Pre-nursing.

The A-10 champion men's swimming and diving team placed one member on the team in senior Joe Martin (Naugatuck, Conn.). Martin owns a 3.08 gpa in Sport Management. The Minutewomen swimming and diving team, which captured its first A-10 title last winter, placed sophomore Kate Allery (South Hadley, Mass.) and junior Becky Hunnewell (Sandwich, Mass.) on the squad. Allery owns a 3.47 gpa in Psychology, and Hunnewell has a 3.22 mark in French Studies.

The men's indoor track and field team featured two Minutemen in senior Hugh Reid (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and senior Marc Sylvander (Chicopee, Mass.). Reid has a 3.71 gpa in Political Science, while Sylvander is a 3.28 student in Chemical Engineering.

The UMass women's indoor track and field team placed a league-best three athletes on the team in senior Melissa Henderson (Abington, Mass.), senior Carole LaPlante (Gardiner, Mass.) and senior Megan McCormick (State College, Pa.). Henderson is a 3.74 student in Spanish, while LaPlante has a 3.80 gpa in Political Science and McCormick owns a 3.59 mark in Anthropology.

Previously it was announced that UMass senior women's basketball player Kathy Coyner (Belpre, Ohio) had been named to the A-10 academic all-league squad during the conference tournament. She has a 3.31 gpa in Biochemistry.
