Andy Leis and Jennifer Butler named WHMP/UMass Co-Athletes of the Week

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts' men's gymnast Andy Leis (Suffield, Conn.), and women's basketball player Jennifer Butler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) were named WHMP/UMass Co-Athletes of the Week at the weekly UMass Sports Luncheon today.
Leis, a senior, had two second-place finishes and one third place finish as the Minutemen opened the 2001 season by defeating defending national champion Penn State, 205.00-202.150. Leis took second on both the parallel bars (8.55) and the horizontal bar (8.65), and placed third on the pommel horse with a score of 9.00.
The Minutemen return to action this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 19 & 20, as they participate in the West Point (N.Y.) Open.
Butler, a sophomore center, averaged 18.7 points per game, including a career-high 28 vs. Rhode Island, and nine rebounds as the Minutewomen went 2-1 last week. She shot 47.6 percent (20-42) from the field and 80 percent (16-20) from the free throw line, and recorded double-doubles versus both Xavier and Dayton. Butler collected 14 points and 10 rebounds against the Musketeers, and then had 14 points and 12 rebounds against the Flyers.
The Minutewomen are back in action at the Mullins Center this Saturday, Jan. 20, as they take on conference rival George Washington. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
