Trio Selected As UMass Student-Athletes Of The Week

Faessler of tennis, Olbrys of women's basketball and Torres of softball earn the weekly award.

AMHERST, Mass. – Three student-athletes earned UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by UMassFive College Credit Union. Ella Faessler of women's tennis, Odyssey Torres of softball and Megan Olbrys will all be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon.

The luncheon takes place on Wednesday, February 18, at noon in the Berkshire Room of the Berkshire Dining Commons. Cost to attend is $17 (15.30 for UMass Alumni). Women's Basketball Head Coach and Director of Broadcasting Jay Burnham will be the featured speakers.

Ella Faessler | Senior | Hilton Head, S.C.
On a 2-0 week for UMass, Ella Faessler went 2-0 in singles competition. Faessler earned a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) win at No. 1 over Boston University's Gabriella Mikayla, one of the best in the region, to help the Minutewomen to a 5-2 victory on Saturday. She also came away with a 7-5, 6-0 win at the No. 2 slot over Hofstra, aiding Massachusetts to a 7-0 sweep on Sunday afternoon. 

In doubles play, Faessler went 1-0 with partner Renata Farina. The pair defeated Hofstra 6-1 on Sunday to help clinch the doubles point. Against Boston University on Saturday, the duo led 5-2 over their opponents before the match came to a halt. 

Odyssey Torres | Junior | Los Angeles, Calif. (Ramona High School) | Infielder 
Torres helped spark the offensive unit for the Minutewomen, hitting .600 at the plate with six extra base hits over five games at the Low Country Classic in Charleston, S.C. Torres had multiple hits in four of the five contests, and drove in nine runs on five doubles and one triple. The Los Angeles native helped lead UMass to four consecutive victories.

Megan Olbrys | Senior | Norwood, Mass (Norwood) | Forward
Megan Olbrys was dominant in the paint for the Minutewomen, averaging 14 points and 8.5 rebounds a game while also dishing out 4.5 assists per game. On the defensive end, Olbrys was in every passing lane, tying a career high in steals (4) against NIU. With 16 points and 11 rebounds against NIU, Olbrys collected her sixth double-double of the season, while also surpassing the 500 career rebound mark. In a battle with then undefeated Miami (OH), Olbrys had one of her finest games dawning the maroon and white, playing all 40 minutes and hitting the game winning shot with under two seconds left in the contest.
