Musa, Quigg, Faessler and Tye receive student-athlete of the week accolades after impressive performances last week.
AMHERST, Mass. – Four standout student-athletes have been named the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, sponsored by UMassFive College Credit Union. Jack Musa of hockey, Sammy Quigg of men's swim and dive, and Ella Faessler and Amelia Tye both of tennis will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wednesday, October 8, at noon in the Berkshire Room of the Berkshire Dining Commons.
Speakers at this week's luncheon will be women's cross country head coach Christine Engel and baseball co-head coaches Brandon Shileikis and Max Weir. Cost to attend is $17 ($15.30 for UMass Alumni).
Musa put up five points on three goals and two assists in the pair of wins against the Wildcats, won 5-of-5 faceoffs and was +3 on the weekend. The Orange Park, Florida native opened the scoring in Saturday's 5-3 victory, had an assist on the game-winner in a come-from-behind third period and added a late shorthanded empty net goal. On Sunday, Musa set up the game-opening power-play goal and registered an empty net goal after NMU had cut the deficit to one, scoring with the extra attacker.
Quigg took second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.91, before sitting atop the podium in the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.98. His time of 44.98 marked the fastest 100 freestyle time in a dual meet in program history. Quigg helped the 200 medley relay team to second place with a combined time of 1:32.62 as the anchor. He also aided the 400 freestyle relay team to a third-place finish with a time of 3:07.05 as the anchor.
Faessler and Tye made a fantastic run to the Doubles Championships at the 2025 MAC Individual Championships this past weekend. In the first round on Friday, the duo defeated their Eastern Michigan opponents, 8-6, to advance to the Quarterfinals. In the Quarterfinals, Faessler and Tye defeated Ball State, 8-5, to move on to the Semifinals. There, they took down Miami (OH) 8-6 to make the Doubles Finals on Sunday. The duo dropped the finals match to Ball State, 8-3, but made a stellar run to make the Championships.
