AMHERST, Mass. – Men's cross country junior Collin Catherwood and hockey freshman Václav Nestrašil have been selected as the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday. The duo will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wednesday, Oct. 15 in the Berkshire Room of the Berkshire Dining Commons.
This week's guest speakers are men's cross country head coach Tim Ritchie and football general manager Jared Osumah.
Catherwood picked up his third individual win of the season to help the men's cross country team to a second place finish in a 28-school field at the New England Championships last Friday. The Central Valley, N.Y. native completed the 8K as the individual champion with a time of 23:57.82, setting a championship course record and the all-time course record at Hopkinton Fairgrounds. The Minutemen posted a score of 107, with three individuals finishing inside the top-10.
In hockey's 4-1 victory over the Stonehill at Warrior Arena last week, Nestrašil registered a hat trick, which included two power-play goals. The three tallies came on seven shots for the Prague, Czechia, native, a team high. His performance marked the first hat trick by a UMass freshman since 2015 and he currently has four goals in three games to begin his collegiate career.
