Slovin’s gift was provided in honor of his late father, Dr. Theodore Slovin ’66 PhD
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts athletics is extremely proud to announce the very first major gift supporting the launch of the department's new Script U Scholarship Society by Jeffrey T. Slovin '87 and the Slovin family in honor of Dr. Theodore Slovin, who earned his PhD from UMass in 1966. A portion of Slovin's gift will also support the Isenberg School of Management.
Dr. Slovin passed away on December 12, 2024. He earned his PhD in Psychology from the University of Massachusetts and dedicated 30 years to the university, where he taught and served in the Counseling Services Department. His life's work was not only a career but a calling – helping others was at the heart of everything he did.
"This extraordinary gesture is one that proudly celebrates the Slovin family legacy at UMass, honoring the unwavering compassion and commitment to the Commonwealth's flagship campus by family patriarch Ted Slovin," said Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford. "We are grateful for the many ways Ted, his wife Barbara, their children and grandchildren have positively impacted our athletics department and campus community over the years. This is a special opportunity for us to recognize this important UMass family and use Jeff's remarkable philanthropy to impact the lives of current and future student-athletes."
In honor of the Slovin family legacy, the men's basketball locker room located in the John Francis Kennedy Champions Center will be named after the Slovin family.
"We are pleased to make a gift in honor of my dad, a very special man who became a fixture at the University of Massachusetts, said alumnus and the oldest of Ted's children, Jeff Slovin. "My father was a beloved teacher, counselor and mentor to many in the community."
"My father loved UMass and our family has deep ties to the school and community," continued Slovin. "Along with his contributions to the community, nothing made him happier than watching UMass basketball. I want this gift to represent our unwavering support to UMass athletics and Ryan Bamford. Ryan's vision for UMass and the investments made by the administration, will allow us to thrive in a new NCAA model and in our important transition to the MAC. I have tremendous confidence in the future of Massachusetts Athletics."
The Slovin family tree has deep ties to the maroon and white. Jeff is a 1987 graduate of the Isenberg School of Management (ISOM). His mother, Barbara Slovin, graduated from the College of Education in 1979 and later earned a graduate degree, while his brothers, Ken and David, both graduated from the College of Natural Sciences in 1989 and 1991, respectively. David is the father of Eli Slovin, a 2024 ISOM graduate who worked with UMass Athletics in the marketing department as an undergraduate, serving as a popular in-game host at many athletic events.
