AMHERST, MASS. -- Massachusetts (1-4) dropped a competitive 87-80 game to Temple (4-2) on Saturday night at Mohegan Sun.

The Minutemen orchestrated a 15-2 scoring run late in the first half to bring the game within one possession but could not close the gap in the second half. Massachusetts held a strong presence down low, scoring 30 points in the paint while swatting four shots.

Sophomore Jaylen Curry led the Minutemen with 17 points to go along with three rebounds and a pair of assists. Curry has now scored in double figures in four consecutive games.

Shahid Muhammad scored a season-high 12 points, shooting 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. The performance marks the first double-digit scoring total for Muhammad.

Daniel Hankins-Sanford recorded his second double-double of the year, scoring 15 points while snagging a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Owls were led by Jamal Mashburn Jr., who scored a game-high 26 points on the night.

A free throw from Daniel Rivera got the scoring going, giving Massachusetts a 1-0 lead 19 seconds after the opening tip.
An and-one layup from Temple's Quante Berry made it 7-2 Owls with just under 18 minutes to go in the first half.
A fast break three-pointer from Jaylen Curry punctuated a 7-0 swing for the Minutemen, providing a 9-7 lead with 16:18 left in the half.

The Minutemen went into halftime trailing 43-36.
Shahid Muhammad finished an alley-oop to cut the deficit to four just one minute into the second half.
Temple secured their largest lead of the second half at 62-48 after a transition dunk from Shane Dezonie with 13:38 remaining on the clock.
The Minutemen traded baskets with the opposition for much of the next 11 minutes, cutting the deficit to nine on five different occasions.
A made jumper from Daniel Hankins-Sanford cut the Temple advantage to seven with 1:19 to go in regulation.
Two free-throws from Tarique Foster brought the deficit down to six points with 20 seconds left in regulation but Massachusetts was unable to close the gap, falling 87-80 at Mohegan Sun.
