Pair of Minutemen Collect Atlantic 10 Postseason Awards

Luttazi selected to All-Academic Team; Blumenthal voted All-Rookie.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Graduate student Steve Luttazi and freshman Justin Blumenthal of the University of Massachusetts baseball team have been honored by the Atlantic 10 Conference with postseason accolades, as announced by the league on Wednesday morning. Luttazi earned placement on the All-Academic Team, while Blumenthal was tabbed to the All-Rookie Team.
 
Luttazi, a finance major from Franklin, Massachusetts, finished the season with a .327 batting average, sitting second on the team. In 48 appearances, including 40 starts, the graduate student tallied 49 hits, with eight doubles and four home runs, 33 runs and 26 RBI, in 150 at bats. He also had an on base percentage of .415 and a slugging percentage of .460. Luttazi registered 69 total bases, which included a 15-game long reached base streak in the season. He recorded 14 multi-hit contests, including nine two-hit contests, three three-hit games and two four-hit contests. At UConn (3/22) earlier this year, Luttazi recorded a career high three doubles, tying for the program's most in a single game, and totaled a career-best four hits against Hartford (4/25). In the field, Luttazi posted a .988 fielding percentage on 73 putouts, nine assists and only one error, while contributing to seven double plays. Luttazi was also named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team.
 
In his rookie season, Blumenthal hit a team-leading .361 on the season with eight extra-base hits, which included his first collegiate triple, and 22 RBI. His batting average ranked seventh in the A-10. He also averaged a .393 on base percentage and a .429 slugging percentage. The Portsmouth, New Hampshire, native, registered 48 total hits, 21 runs and 57 total bases in 40 appearances, getting the start in 31. Blumenthal had a career-best four hits and two runs scored against Dayton (5/19), while batting in a career high three runs at UMass Lowell (5/9). He reached base safely in 19 straight games and had a 19-game hitting streak, the longest on the team. Blumenthal also tallied four stolen bases. With only nine strikeouts on the year, the freshman sits 10th in the NCAA in toughest to strikeout with a strikeout average of 14.8. Blumenthal recorded 28 putouts, 56 assists and 12 errors for a .875 fielding percentage, and contributed to one double play.
